Experiments proved that it could protect mice from ebola and Marburg virus challenges. So what’s the difference between Gmail and Hotmail? Which of the two is better? A DNA vaccine uses a specific DNA sequence to stimulate the immune system to fight against viruses. Studies have also been conducted on DNA vaccines that could be applied to people in high-risk regions. One of the promising monoclonal antibodies, MR191, has successfully protected monkeys from fatal Marburg virus infection. Scientists and research teams are developing monoclonal antibodies, engineered proteins that can neutralize a virus against the Marburg virus. Vaccines (Zabdeno and Mvabea) for Ebola could also potentially protect against MVD, but their efficacy has not been proven in clinical trials. According to WHO, treatments (Remdesivir and Favipiravir) that have been used in clinical studies for EVD could also be tested for MVD or used under compassionate use/expanded access. The quickest alternative to the current outbreak is to adopt the same vaccines and treatments used for Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). When hospitalized, patients infected with the Marburg virus are handled with supportive therapy like oral rehydration or through injection. Although the Marburg virus has been around for over half a century, there is still no treatment or vaccine. This fatal but rare virus is unlikely to cause a global pandemic, but the worry lurks. And therefore, despite the high fatality rate-up to 88 percent in the past outbreaks, the World Health Organization (WHO) still access the risk of the Marburg virus at the global level to be low. This character of the Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) makes it less transmissive than those viruses that cause pandemics, such as Covid or SARS, which can be transmitted through the air.
